"My Presence" is almost the same as the "Desktop" you can download from the "My Presence" popup.
What "My Presence" does, is show you who is on the site and also shows which of your friends are on the site, this is just an easy way for you to send a PM (private message) to a friend thats also on the site at the same time as you, or to leave them an (internal site or) email message if they are not on the site.
